💗🌿 ALLIUM NEVSKIANUM – a rare miniature Allium with surprisingly large flowers

Allium nevskianum is an unusual and highly decorative dwarf ornamental onion from the mountainous regions of Central Asia. Despite growing only around 10–15 cm tall, it produces remarkably large, dense globes of pinkish-red to purple star-shaped flowers, creating a spectacular contrast between the plant’s compact size and impressive blooms.

One of its most attractive features is the pair of broad, blue-green leaves that remain decorative during flowering. The flower head rises between these substantial leaves, giving the plant an architectural appearance reminiscent of Allium karataviense, but with richer flower colour.

Flowering in May–June, this compact Allium is perfect for rock gardens, the front of borders, gravel gardens and smaller planting areas. It looks particularly impressive when several bulbs are planted together, creating eye-catching clusters of pink-purple flowers close to ground level.

☀️ Allium nevskianum thrives in a sunny position and prefers well-drained soil. Its natural habitat includes dry, rocky mountain slopes, making good drainage especially important.

🐝 Like many ornamental Alliums, its flowers are attractive to bees and other beneficial pollinators.

🌿 Beautifully combines with botanical tulips, dwarf irises, low-growing ornamental grasses, sedums and other compact Alliums.
