The PRAIRIE SKY<\/strong> variety’s springtime bluish-green leaves take on a reddish hue in summer, turning yellow in autumn. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum)<\/em> is native to North America. With its many good qualities, switchgrass is an excellent addition to the garden. It is both an ideal solo plant and can be combined with many other ornamental plants in one flower bed, making it an ideal background plant. It looks decorative from spring to autumn. What makes it particularly beautiful is its autumn colour and the large, wide flowers in the second half of summer. Even in a winter garden, the switchgrass looks spectacular. A thin layer of snow on first frost makes it particularly eye-catching. Switchgrass grows upright and, although it is tall and vigorous, it leaves a delicate impression. In the wild, it can grow up to two metres tall, but in most cases it is no taller than 150 cm. It starts growing relatively late in the spring and develops quite slowly. At this time the plant is dense, but towards the end of the summer switchgrass forms a large, sparse, airy bunch. Switchgrass starts blooming in July\u2013August, the whorl is narrow at the beginning of blooming, but gradually becomes wider. At the end of blooming, the whorls may hang, forming an exceptionally sparse azure inflorescence. The length and width of the whorl is up to 30 cm.
